Why is the town of Athabasca located where it is?
Before there were roads, rivers were the main transportation corridors. As the Athabasca River flowed north and eventually joined the Mackenzie River, it was a major route to northern Canada. At a bend of the river where it flowed closest to Edmonton, there was a flood plain which allowed easy boat access to the river. At that location a settlement called Athabasca Landing was established. The settlement became the Town of Athabasca.
