What is the difference between a river basin and a watershed?

A river basin is the land area which is drained by a certain river (a large natural channel of flowing water) and its tributaries. A river basin is equivalent to a river catchment area or basin, i.e. the surface area that collects all precipitation. Technically, a watershed is either 1) the topographic boundary (or ridge of higher ground) that separates water draining into one river basin or another, or 2) the area above a certain altitude of a river that contributes to that stream. Many people treat "basin" and "watershed" as synonyms.
