What is the difference between a river and a lake?

What is the difference between a lake and a pond?

A pond is a standing body of water with a shallow depth that permits sunlight to penetrate to the bottom and so may allow rooted plants to grow entirely across it. A lake is a standing body of water with greater depth so that sunlight cannot penetrate to the bottom and so does not allow rooted plants to grow across it. However rooted plants may grow along a lake’s margins.
